The Big 100

First off, thank you!

Thank you dear reader for faithfully reading this simple blog. Thank you for participating in the conversation and bringing your voice. It matters. You matter.

Today marks an important milestone here at Abraham Chronicles. It’s blog post #100!

On January 6th of this year, I started on this journey not knowing where it will take me. More than eight months later, I am more than grateful for the opportunity to share in this journey with each and every once of you. I’ve had another child, gone through a career change, and learned a lot about living with intentionality. And you have been there the entire time. Thank you!

I do not take your readership lightly. I may click the “publish” button, but it’s you who contributes in to building this community.

To celebrate,  I have a $50 Amazon Gift Card to give away for free! Gratis! Gratuit! 免费!

In addition to that top prize, I’m also giving away a copy of Chasing Daylight (book by Erwin McManus) and Psalms (album by Shane & Shane)!

I first read Chasing Daylight last fall and instantly coded it as one my favorites. McManus writes about ‘seizing God moments’ and following your passions. One of my favorite quotes from the book, “If you’re passionate about God, you can trust your passions.” I am certain you’ll love it too.

In college a friend of mind told me about Shane and Shane – this duo of worship leaders from Texas captive you with their heartfelt lyrics and synchronous melodies. Psalms is one of their early albums that is a collection of songs that are inspired by Psalms in the Bible. You’ll listen to the entire album knowing that the Shanes genuinely poured their hearts and souls into each and every song. Fact: You will put Track 6, Psalm 145, on repeat.

There you have it. Two of my absolute favorites–two resources that have sharpened and refined my faith in countless ways. Even if you don’t win, I hope you will check them out–they will always be on the top of my list.

Now, the contest! Here’s how to enter:

1. Leave a comment on this post with an answer to the question, “What is your favorite book and your favorite album?”

2. Twitter a link to this post mentioning “@dustinv” and this link: http://cl.ly/9lvA . If you don’t have a Twitter account, you can use Facebook. You can write your own or use this example. “Win a $50 Amazon giftcard (and more!) on @dustinv’s blog http://cl.ly/9lvA”.

3. On Friday, September, 2nd  (2:00 PM EST) I’ll will pick the winners (via Random.org). I’ll announce them the on Friday and you can email your address if you’re one of the winners.

***

Update: Contest is over. Thank you for participating. Below are the winners:

1. $50 Amazon gift card: Jason Wert (@JCWert) – http://cl.ly/9oG4
2. Chasing Daylight by Erwin McManus: Andy Darnell (@andydarnell) – http://cl.ly/9odR

Hey Dustin! Congrats on 100! It is amazing how God can give us lessons everyday, it is good to know there is always something new he wants to teach us.

Alright to answer the questions… Erick and my favorite book as of late is “Under the Overpass” by Mike Yankoski. This book really opened our eyes to what it means to actually “be the church”. I would recommend it to everyone!

If Erick and I were to have to pick one albulm from a fire we would choose something Harry Connick Jr. His “In concert on Braodway” is his latest and has all of our favorites!

Hope you and your family is doing great! We are hoping to get up there around Thanksgiving time again. Maybe see you all in a couple months.

My fav book is anything by Stephen Lawhead, he knows how to spin a good tale and he’s a Christian. His most recent “Skin Map” is a page turner.

Fav album is hard since I haven’t purchased one in ages. I usually just get a few mp3s. If pressed it would have to be Adele’s 21.

My favorite book is 1,000 Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Even though it is a work of fiction, the tale of redemption in this story is too powerful to walk away from. You will be changed by reading this book.

Favorite album? Ooooh, tough question. Probably a tie between Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Fairytales and NeedtoBreathe’s Outsiders.

It’s been great seeing your family grow, your life change, and your heart become more Christ-like.

Thanks for the last 100 memories. Here’s to 100 more!

(PS: favorite book right now is “Outliers” [reading it for the first time] and favorite album is The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky)

      Nice, thanks Alex!

Btw, I’ve read The Tipping Point and I plan on reading Blink next week while traveling. Love Gladwell. Let me know how you like Outliers.

So far I LOVE it. I just started it Tuesday and I’m almost done. Can’t put it down.

Let me know how Blink is. I really liked Tipping Point.

If you read Blink, you may also want to pick up “Think”. It is a response to Blink that I hear is worth reading.

Favorite book: am I allowed to say The Bible? No? Ok… so, I’m thinking possibly Too Busy Not to Pray or maybe God’s Chosen Fast… or probably The Hole in our Gospel

Favorite Album: I like a lot of Christian music but have never found a whole album I love… so it’s going to be Hysteria by Def Leppard or Appetite for Destruction by Guns ‘n’ Roses or anything by Queen or Michael Jackson’s Dangerous or Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet or anything by Jean Michel Jarre or Moving On by Myleene Klass or B.O.O.H. II by Meatloaf

80s music for the win! I must say, Peter: Slippery When Wet is one of my few “Road Trip Albums”. I HAVE to listen to it when traveling more than a couple hours in the car. Just seems appropriate. :)

In my opinion, if you don’t have long hair (preferably permed) and wear tight clothing, you don’t know how to write music!

I forgot to add a couple of albums:

Paul Simon’s Graceland is awesome so is everything Peter Gabriel ever wrote.

The Art of Noise’s ‘best of’ album is pretty sweet on a summer’s afternoon.

and there’s one other that I keep forgetting whenever I’m at my computer but I remember as soon as I get in the car…

My tastes are fairly eclectic. I can’t name my ‘favorite’ album as such because it all depends on what genre I’m in the mood for at that moment!

Well first, congratulations on your 100th post!! I love your blog Dustin, it’s such an encouraging, thoughtful & grace-extending place. My only regret is that i usually get to your posts late & i miss out on the community you’ve built with your readers. I’m happy you’ve reached 100 posts but i’m even happier for how they’ve spoken into my life. So thank you very much for that.

I have lots of favorite books, i’m a voracious reader, but one that really stands out for how it impacted my walk is Francis Chan’s Crazy Love. And favorite album: Joshua Tree, U2 and right now i can’t stop listening to Adele’s 21.

Umm..favorite book would have to be CATCHER IN THE RYE. Or THE SILMARILLION by Tolkien. Vrap. I can’t choose.

Favorite album? GOOD DOG, BAD DOG from Over the Rhine. Or Chagall Guevara’s self-titled album. Hands down. Nothing comes comes close to these.

    Favorite Book: Time Traveler’s Wife
The sheer insanity of trying to plan out the book is enough to garner my respect. But what I wasn’t prepared for, was that by the end, I would deeply care for this star-crossed couple. Very rare that a story is so compelling.

Favorite Album: My Chemical Romance: Black Parade
There are a lot of allusions to death and cancer and the afterlife in this album. And having lived through watching my mother die of cancer, this album hit me in such a visceral spot that I cannot help but to be mesmerized by it.

My favorite book is The Puppet Masters by Robert Heinlein. It is a book that wraps science fiction into a subconscious political battle of the masses. Very well done.

My favorite album is hard to pick. I would have to say that I never get tired of Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon.
